September 12, 2004 -- HitMusic announced the launch of a promotional campaign to entice artists & DJs to sell their work without the need for a major record label. Every new registrant to the independent online music store will automatically enter in our contest to win a DIGI 002 GIVE A WAY.

HitMusic does not stop at at giveaways for artists though. Fans can also be a part of the action by being entered to win an MP3 player everytime they by a CD or MP3 on the site.

"Beyond giving band and musicians the ability to sell their CD & MP3s at our store, HitMusic also wants to help band and musicians with their production costs," notes HitMusic founder Paul Shirley. Why did you form HitMusic?

"As a producer, I was getting artists asking me how to get their music out there. In looking at ways other artists were selling their music, I realized that they were primarily selling their music over the internet through online music distributors. I liked what these companies were doing, but found that they were not giving much value for the bands and artists' money. These companies were keeping most of the money and leaving the artists with too little. So I started Hit Music not just to help them keep their fair share, but to help them get their music out."

"We now that there are a lots of company out there. What makes HitMusic different is not just that we want to provide a complete package. We can for example help a band produce their DVD. Where do you expect the online music retail business to be in the next year?

The titanic developments in new technology have radically changed the way we watch TV and movies at home. Gone are the days when the TV set was a box in the corner with a 20in screen and a tinny speaker. Now most of us prefer to watch movies and sports casts on a widescreen thats at least 28in from corner to corner. If you are a fan of home theater then that screen will almost certainly be bigger and be accompanied by a surround sound speaker system to maximise the aural effect and immerse you in the action. As technology improves and equipment becomes cheaper more and more people will have high definition TVs and home theater setups. However if Sony has its way well all be enjoying a completely different moviewatching experience on a 2inch mobile phone screen. Sony wants to see an iTunesstyle download service for movies so we can download them and watch them on the move. Would you watch a film on a cellphone? I wouldnt. Imagine it. Out would go the immersive involving experience of the movie theater that weve tried so hard to create at home and in its place would be a screen so small that it would be difficult to make out what was going on. That in itself would create a dilemma for filmmakers. If a sizeable number of people who pay to see a movie do so by downloading it on their mobile will directors have to take this into account when making it? Will studios reject cuts because they contain too many subtle facial expressions or movements that cant be detected on a tiny screen? The titanic developments in new technology have radically changed the way we watch TV and movies at home. Gone are the days when the TV set was a box in the corner with a 20in screen and a tinny speaker. Now most of us prefer to watch movies and sports casts on a widescreen thats at least 28in from corner to corner. If you are a fan of home theater then that screen will almost certainly be bigger and be accompanied by a surround sound speaker system to maximise the aural effect and immerse you in the action. As technology improves and equipment becomes cheaper more and more people will have high definition TVs and home theater setups. However if Sony has its way well all be enjoying a completely different moviewatching experience on a 2inch mobile phone screen. Sony wants to see an iTunesstyle download service for movies so we can download them and watch them on the move. Would you watch a film on a cellphone? I wouldnt. Imagine it. Out would go the immersive involving experience of the movie theater that weve tried so hard to create at home and in its place would be a screen so small that it would be difficult to make out what was going on. That in itself would create a dilemma for filmmakers. If a sizeable number of people who pay to see a movie do so by downloading it on their mobile will directors have to take this into account when making it? Will studios reject cuts because they contain too many subtle facial expressions or movements that cant be detected on a tiny screen? Will the muted colors of a Saving Private Ryan have to replaced with more lurid and brightly colored scenes to make them more easily visible on a cellphone? And what of the audio? Is their any point in spending time and money developing a detailed and textured surroundsound experience if a significant portion of your audience will be listening on earbuds while travelling on a train? These examples may be extreme but they do highlight the differences between the way a music download service works and the way a movie download service would. Music by its nature is immensely portable. OK the sound quality from an iPod over a pair of earbuds may be nothing compared to that from a decent hifi setup but for most people most of the time its a close enough approximation. That wont be the case with movies. Why did those tiny battery powered pocket TVs never really takeoff? For the same reason. Apple CEO Steve Jobs who knows a thing or two about the movie industry through his stewardship of Pixar has often said that hes not interested in producing a video iPod because noone wants to watch movies on a small screen. Jobs is right about most things and I think hes right about that. Sony disagrees. It will be interesting to see whos right. The Record Industry Continues Battle Against Free Music Downloads
Movie and record producers alike are saying filesharing networks that permit its users the ability to make copies from other network members computers are infringing on the copyright laws and costing billions of dollars in lost revenue. The recording industry claims to have lost 25 of its revenues since computer so called thieves have been using peertopeer filesharing networks to obtain free music downloads. The two latest filesharing companies to be targeted by these copyright lawsuits are Grokster Ltd known for its Grokster filesharing software and StreamCast Networks Inc. from which the Morpheus free music downloading software is distributed. Unlike Napster Grokster and Morpheus put a spin on the popular filesharing phenomenon. Instead of indexing the shared files like Napster did these filesharing products enables its network members to build their own indexes thus allowing others within the network to download free music and movie files. While some musicians are protesting they are being cheated by these illegal free music downloads others are speaking out backing how music movies pictures and copy are being shared over the Internet. Some music lovers actually use the filesharing networks to check out an artists latest release before paying up to 18 for a CD that may only have one good song on it. You still will have those that will never make a purchase and continue to take advantage of the free music download networks. Many filesharing network users have said that using these networks is good for the music industry. Filesharing can bring listeners to smaller independent bands that they may not otherwise hear on radio or in the mainstream. With the likes of Apples iTunes store many have turned their backs on filesharing networks paying 99 cents per song Apple claims to sell more than 1 millions songs everyday. Although iTunes is limited still thus giving file sharing networks a void to fill the unlimited access to music and movies that may otherwise not be able from iTunes. In late 2003 record companies started suing individuals that were downloading free music. With filesharing networks like Grokster and Morpheus it will be much harder for the recording industry to track down files that are uploaded by individual users. With the Supreme Court now involved they are expected to make some type of ruling in June 2005 on what if any action should be taken against the makers of filesharing network software. The wrong decision could discourage the future development of products like the iPod or other filesharing software programs that could be used for legal purposes. Since Grokster and Morpheus do not monitor or have any knowledge of who or what is being downloaded a federal judge in Los Angeles and the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the copyright infringement charges against both these filesharing networks. Based on the 1984 ruling of the Supreme Court that stated the use of Sony Betamax which allowed users to make copies at home of copyrighted TV programs was legal. The recording industries angle last week was that the approach companies like Grokster and Morpheus are making by advertising their software will provide access to free copies of copyrighted materials should allow them to be sued and shut down. While the jury may be out on this one for sometime file sharing networks and free music downloads will continue with most users not really worrying about getting sued since most do not download free music in excess of a few files per month. The titanic developments in new technology have radically changed the way we watch TV and movies at home. Gone are the days when the TV set was a box in the corner with a 20in screen and a tinny speaker. Now most of us prefer to watch movies and sports casts on a widescreen thats at least 28in from corner to corner. If you are a fan of home theater then that screen will almost certainly be bigger and be accompanied by a surround sound speaker system to maximise the aural effect and immerse you in the action. As technology improves and equipment becomes cheaper more and more people will have high definition TVs and home theater setups. However if Sony has its way well all be enjoying a completely different moviewatching experience on a 2inch mobile phone screen. Sony wants to see an iTunesstyle download service for movies so we can download them and watch them on the move. Would you watch a film on a cellphone? I wouldnt. Imagine it. Out would go the immersive involving experience of the movie theater that weve tried so hard to create at home and in its place would be a screen so small that it would be difficult to make out what was going on. That in itself would create a dilemma for filmmakers. If a sizeable number of people who pay to see a movie do so by downloading it on their mobile will directors have to take this into account when making it? Will studios reject cuts because they contain too many subtle facial expressions or movements that cant be detected on a tiny screen? Will the muted colors of a Saving Private Ryan have to replaced with more lurid and brightly colored scenes to make them more easily visible on a cellphone? And what of the audio? Is their any point in spending time and money developing a detailed and textured surroundsound experience if a significant portion of your audience will be listening on earbuds while travelling on a train? These examples may be extreme but they do highlight the differences between the way a music download service works and the way a movie download service would. Music by its nature is immensely portable. OK the sound quality from an iPod over a pair of earbuds may be nothing compared to that from a decent hifi setup but for most people most of the time its a close enough approximation. That wont be the case with movies. Why did those tiny battery powered pocket TVs never really takeoff? For the same reason. Apple CEO Steve Jobs who knows a thing or two about the movie industry through his stewardship of Pixar has often said that hes not interested in producing a video iPod because noone wants to watch movies on a small screen. Jobs is right about most things and I think hes right about that. Sony disagrees. It will be interesting to see whos right. Why did you form HitMusic?

"As a producer, I was getting artists asking me how to get their music out there.
